Hello, this is John Escher. Thanks for checking out my portfolio. My hope is that it conveys two things: 1) I am an experienced creative leader with proven success delivering memorable brand experiences, and 2) I am a team player who is positive, honest, and great to be around.
I consider myself a multi-disciplinary creative leader. I am currently Art Director at SPIE, but I started my career as a copywriter, and over the last eight years I have added a whole bunch of skills — project management, art direction, design, illustration, and video editing — which have led to a wide range of agency, not-for-profit, and startup work. I've been fortunate to have partnered with some of the best companies in the Northwest, including Microsoft, Eddie Bauer, Amazon, Parliament, and Weber Shandwick.
As Art Director at SPIE, my role is to develop benchmark creative for an international non-profit that is advancing light-based science globally. We put on large-scale conferences in both the USA and Europe, and manage the largest digital library for optics and photonics applied research. This means lots of conceptual work and presenting my ideas to senior leadership. I also mentor a small team of visual designers and production designers, always looking for ways to improve processes and brand consistency.
A few years back I started my own company, Tmber, which initially provided trail videos and information about the Pacific Northwest, but has since grown to also power Eddie Bauer's Adventure App with a database of more than 10,000 outdoor adventures across the USA. This has meant overseeing both paid and volunteer staff, delivering projects from concept to completion, and plenty of creative hustle.
In addition to creative work, I am passionate about staying fit and being ready for the next opportunity to adventure. I've hiked and climbed all over the PNW, (including all the major volcanoes from Mount Hood to Mount Baker), kayaked in seven Ski to Sea races (and all over Seattle), completed the Seattle to Portland cycling tour, surfed up and down the Washington and Oregon coast, car camped in dozens of state parks and national forests, and snowboarded through several epic (and miserable) seasons of snowfall.
Thanks again for stopping by. Here's my CV. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or opportunities.
